Using Your Vizio Remote to Connect to Wi-Fi
This is the method that works for the vast majority of Vizio TV owners. It assumes you have a working remote with a Home button, Menu button, or Input button.- Press the Menu or Home button on your remote. On newer SmartCast models, the button may be labeled with a small house icon.
- Use the directional pad to scroll to Network or Settings. On some models, you first select Settings, then Network.
- Highlight Wi-Fi and press OK. Your TV will scan for available networks.
- Select your network name from the list. If your network does not appear, make sure the TV is not in Airplane mode and that you are within range of the router.
- Enter your Wi-Fi password using the on-screen keyboard. The password is case-sensitive.
- Press Connect or Done. The TV will test the connection. If it succeeds, you will see a confirmation message.
Connecting Without a Remote Using Physical Buttons on the TV
When the remote is lost or broken, you can still connect your Vizio TV to Wi-Fi using the physical buttons built into the TV. The location and function of these buttons vary by model, but the general process is the same. Most Vizio TVs have a small joystick or a set of buttons on the bottom edge, below the screen, or on the back near the left side. The buttons are usually labeled with symbols like a power icon, a plus, a minus, and an input symbol. If your TV has a joystick:- Press the joystick straight in to act as an OK button.
- Move it left and right to scroll through menu options.
- Move it up and down to adjust volume or navigate vertical lists.
- Press and hold the Input button. This often opens a quick menu.
- Use the Volume Up/Down buttons to scroll through options like “Network” or “Wi-Fi Setup.”
- Press the Input button again to select the highlighted option.
Connecting via the Vizio SmartCast Mobile App
When you do not have any remote and the physical buttons are not enough, your phone can act as both the remote and the keyboard. This requires the Vizio SmartCast app, available for free on both Android and iPhone.- Download and install the Vizio SmartCast app from your app store.
- Open the app. It will automatically search for nearby Vizio TVs on the same Wi-Fi network.
- If your TV is not connected to any network yet, you have a problem: the app needs to find the TV over Wi-Fi. The workaround is to create a temporary mobile hotspot using your phone. Name the hotspot exactly the same as your home Wi-Fi network and use the same password. This tricks the TV into connecting to your phone.
- Once the TV connects to your hotspot, the app will detect it. You can now use the app as a virtual remote to navigate to the network settings and connect the TV to your actual home Wi-Fi.
- After the TV is connected to your home network, turn off the mobile hotspot. The TV will remain connected to your home Wi-Fi.
Handling Networks That Require a Login (Captive Portals)
A captive portal is a login page that pops up when you first connect to a public network, like in a hotel, dorm, or coffee shop. You need to agree to terms or enter a room number before you can get online. Vizio TVs do not handle these well because they lack a full web browser. If you try to connect your Vizio TV to a captive portal network, it will likely show that it is connected to Wi-Fi but there is no internet. This is because the TV cannot display the login page. The simplest fix is to use a travel router. Here is how:- Connect a small travel router (like the TP-Link TL-WR902AC) to the hotel or dorm network using your laptop or phone.
- Configure the travel router to act as a Wi-Fi repeater. It will connect to the captive portal network and then create its own private Wi-Fi network.
- Connect your Vizio TV to the travel router’s network. The TV sees this as a standard home network, so no login page is needed.
Troubleshooting Common Wi-Fi Connection Problems
Sometimes the process works but the connection drops or fails to save. Here are the most common problems and how to fix them. The TV forgets the Wi-Fi password after a power outage. This happens if the TV is not fully shutting down. To fix it, go to Settings > Network > Manage Networks. Delete the saved network and re-enter the password fresh. The TV keeps disconnecting after a few hours. This is often a sign of an IP address conflict or a weak signal. Try switching from 5GHz to 2.4GHz in your router settings. Older Vizio models only support 2.4GHz. If your TV is dual-band, go to Network > Advanced and set the band preference to 2.4GHz only. You cannot find your hidden network. Vizio TVs support hidden SSIDs, but you must manually type the network name. Go to Network > Add Network and enter the exact SSID. Do not use a hidden network if you can avoid it β it causes connection issues on Vizio TVs. The Wi-Fi option is grayed out. This usually means the TV is stuck in “Apps Only” mode (explained in the next section), or the Wi-Fi hardware is temporarily disabled. Unplug the TV for 60 seconds, then plug it back in. This resets the network adapter.Overcoming the “Apps Only” Mode That Blocks Network Settings
This is a specific Vizio issue that catches many people off guard. “Apps Only” mode is a feature on newer SmartCast TVs that restricts the full TV menu. When this mode is active, you cannot access the network settings. The TV acts like a smart streaming device rather than a full TV. If you see only apps on your home screen and no way to reach settings, you are in Apps Only mode. To get out of it:- Press the Menu button on your remote. If that does not work, press the Input button repeatedly until you see a list of inputs.
- Scroll to the Settings icon (it looks like a gear) and press OK.
- Go to Accounts or System.
- Look for Apps Only Mode or SmartCast Home. Switch it to Off or Full TV Mode.
- If you cannot find this option, link a Google account to your TV first. After linking, the option to disable Apps Only mode becomes available.
Understanding Model-Specific Menus and Button Layouts
Not all Vizio TVs are the same. The menu path and button locations change depending on the series and year.| Series | Common Remote Type | Wi-Fi Settings Location |
|---|---|---|
| D-Series | Standard remote with Menu button | Settings > Network > Wi-Fi (no SmartCast) |
| E-Series | Standard remote or basic remote | Settings > Network > Wi-Fi (older models may lack SmartCast) |
| V-Series (2018+) | Home button on remote | SmartCast > Settings > Network |
| M-Series (2020+) | Home button on remote | Settings > Network > Wi-Fi |
| P-Series | Home button on remote | Settings > Network > Wi-Fi |
| A-Series | Basic remote (may lack directional pad) | Use SmartCast app or physical buttons on TV |
